There are no hills.
Like...none.
Zero.
As in...I was considering using my friend's 20 foot inclined driveway for my hill training.
And my other option was up and down the anthill in our neighbor's front yard.
And then I realized that maybe that wouldn't work.
So, ever the resourceful one, I went to our health club and did intervals on the treadmill instead.
4.617m in 40:04, with the fastest interval being at a 6:58mile. The work out was 10 minutes of warm up, 20 minutes of intervals, and then 10 minutes of cool down. The intervals were 10x40seconds fast, with the fast increasing in sets of 5, and the slow in-between being an 8:49min/m for 1:20 each time.
It was hard, but it felt good. And I can't believe I didn't do any of this earlier this year.
But here's my reasoning about that...
I think my body took a lot longer than I had originally thought to recover from IronMan France. I started training again just a week and a half later and expected to be fine. And really, I think I'm just now actually alright.
Lesson learned: Sometimes I think I'm invincible. And sometimes I am. But in general...I guess I'm not.
But that's okay. Being human isn't so bad either.

Just wait until you're 40, hermanita. You make all these goals when you're in peak shape, and when you discount recovery time, your physique rebels. "Hey, you. Old guy. How about falling asleep at your desk and ripping your neck to shreds. How's that taste greyhound."
25 was wasted on me when I actually was 25.
Curly Su,
I was browsing another bloggers BLOG (trisaratops) when I saw a picture that rang a bell with me. The picture of you with your back to the camera, playing the flute, with apparently just a pair of jeans and a bra or bathing suit top on.
The reason it rang a bell with me is because I see it all the time right here: http://alswarriorpoet.com/family7.html
So, my question to you is... do you know the Jon "THE BLAZEMAN" Blais?
If you do... then you know his story... you know where he's at at this point... you understand what he's going through, maybe better than I.
My name is Brian Breen, and I ran the Ironman World Championship in Kona this year in honor of Jon. He and his mother and father flew down to Kona to take part in the whole experience and support me in my endeavor. NBC took notice... and the rest is history... we got quite a bit of coverage from NBC's Ironman broadcast.
Right now, Jon is in Florida... moved there so that his parents could better take care of him. He is not doing well at all. He may only have a few more months left. He's hoping to make it to February 3rd where he'll receive an enormous award in San Diego at the Competitor Awards.
Anyway... ramble ramble. Like I said... I saw your picture on his site in FACES AND PLACES. So I figured you and he knew each other. Then I saw your blog on the TRISARATOPS blog... so I thought I'd send you a little note.
Sorry if I have the wrong person.
Congrats on all of your incredible journeys, triathlon, Ironmans, and experiences. From what I read about you on your blog... I've gotta think you definitely know Blazeman... you two are way too much alike.
Best wishes you to this lovely December.
Brian Breen
hi brian--
i wanted to email you, but i don't have a way to get in touch with you! i hope you read this.
in any case, i got to know john blais about 2 years ago. i found his website somehow and wanted to be involved. so, i sent him a couple cds of my playing...and then we had some email contact and he put my picture up. i followed his journey at kona, but i must admit i haven't had much contact since then, although i've thought of him often.
i would love to do a triathlon in his honor as well. let me know about the details.
i always meant to call him, but i guess i got afraid. can he still talk? what would be the best way for me to get in touch with him? would he even want that?
best of luck to you, and to john. i'm still hoping for a miracle, even if it sounds stupid...
Invincibility is fleeting if not overrated. We're all more interesting and valuable with our challenges.
Stay tuned...
