trying to be Proactive...

I'm in New Jersey, attempting to get myself set up. I've applied to some gyms, and put ads up on Craigslist about teaching flute lessons. I updated my website so that it reflects my move...but I've never really had much traffic on it. I can't seem to make google recognize it if I don't type in my name. For example, if I enter "New Brunswick flute teacher", my website doesn't come up...and it would be really helpful if it did, obviously. Anyone have any suggestions?

I know that summer is a bad time for all of this. I don't particularly expect to get any students now (no one wants to take lessons in the summer), and spinning classes tend to dissipate this time of year too (people are outside riding...imagine!). But, I do want to get this stuff out there so that I have a head start for the fall...that's when all this stuff picks up again, and I don't want to miss out on it...

So...any help in this area from you computer-gurus out there would be greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid I can't give you any computer-guru-like-help but can Rutgers help you at all with getting students? They might have some sort of list you can put your name on so that if someone calls the school looking for a flute teacher, they will get directed to you. We had that when I was in music school, a million years ago.

Three bits of advice for you from a resident computer geek: (1) it takes a while for the content on your page to "propagate" through the world's servers. So it's very likely that your page will come up with Google searches eventually (2) add additional metadata to your Blog template (do a search in Google on how to do this and (3) syndicate your blog with something like www.feedburner.com and add additional tags to your feed so that others can find it using key-word searches.

Good luck!

Curly Su,

What you are talking about is call Search Engine Optimization. Basically the idea is to design a website in such a way that the search engine will recognize your site as the one most relevant when ppl do a search on "New Burnswick Flute teacher".

There are many ways to go about that.

Hi Curly Su,
From a web developer... the search engines don't rely as much on metatags any more; if you can add more text to your home page, to include the keywords that you think are important (use them in sentences, not just listing keywords), the search engines will give those more weight.

Also, add a title to your frameset page; it is currently blank. If you add "New Brunswick Flute Teacher" to the title that will help tremendously. You have titles in the inner frames but not the frameset, which is what loads first.

Those are a couple of easy fixes that will make a big difference! If you have more questions feel free to e-mail me: anne [at] timpany [dot] com.
